Sheryl Lee Ralph on resilience, reinvention and believing

For decades, Sheryl Lee Ralph has defied the odds in Hollywood.
From starring as the original Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls” to earning a long-overdue Emmy for “Abbott Elementary,” Ralph’s rise has been fueled by resilience, faith and an unwavering belief in herself.
In a new episode of “California Stories” with Giselle Fernandez, Ralph reflects on finally reaching a place of gratitude after years of struggle and perseverance.
I am so grateful and so thankful,” she said. “I am living my dream.”
Behind the accolades, Ralph reveals the painful realities she endured while navigating racism, sexism, rejection and personal heartbreak. She speaks candidly about battling self-doubt and rebuilding her confidence after divorce, crediting her children, her husband and the lessons instilled by her Jamaican mother for helping her rediscover herself.
“I looked in the mirror I don’t know why… but it was like I saw me, you know?” she said. “I saw me in the mirror, and I liked what I saw.”
That renewed joy was on full display during a lavish vow renewal celebrating 20 years of marriage, where friends and family gathered as 22 ballerinas carried her unforgettable 80-foot shawl.
Now, Ralph says her mission is bigger than fame. Through advocacy, philanthropy and mentorship, she continues using her platform to encourage others to embrace their worth and rise above negativity.
After more than four decades in entertainment, her message remains one of hope, empowerment and perseverance.
“Don’t you ever give up on you because if it can happen to me, it can absolutely happen to you,” she said.
