Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, one of the world’s most influential patrons of Latin American art, joins Giselle Fernandez for a stirring episode of “LA Stories.”

Speaking from the Museum of Latin American Art, also known as MOLAA, she reflects on the urgency of supporting cultural institutions during politically turbulent times and on her lifelong mission to champion artists whose voices deserve a global platform.

Her deep commitment to elevating Latin American creativity has helped transform Los Angeles into a vital hub for diverse artistic expression.

“It touches my heart to understand that Latin American art is in the forefront of so many minds, even here in the United States,” she said.

The episode also explores her foundation CIFO’s partnership with MOLAA and their groundbreaking exhibition Tierra Cifrada (Coded Earth), which empowers emerging Latinx artists to create works addressing identity, justice and environmental change.

For Fontanals-Cisneros, the power of art extends far beyond aesthetics — it is a catalyst for awareness, connection and societal impact, especially in communities navigating political tension and cultural marginalization. “And many people follow us because the art can transform lives, can transform cities, can transform the life of people.”

Reflecting on her journey from Cuba to Venezuela to becoming a global arts leader, Fontanals-Cisneros shares insights into perseverance, philanthropy and the importance of using one’s passion to uplift others.

Her collection, she says, is less about possession and more about ensuring that future generations can access and learn from the artistic voices that shaped her life. As she considers her legacy, she emphasizes the responsibility to preserve and protect culture with intention and care.

“Continuity and perseverance in what you think is right will take you to success. Period.”
