In the latest episode of “LA Stories with Giselle Fernandez,” actor and activist Marissa Bode — who plays Nessarose in the “Wicked” film franchise — shares her journey from a small Midwestern town to Hollywood stardom.

Growing up in a place where she was one of the few people of color, Bode found solace in the arts and in online queer communities, helping her accept her identity as both a biracial and queer individual. Despite a life-changing car accident at age 11 that left her in a wheelchair, Bode never let her disability define her or limit her dreams.

“I don’t know if I was ever ready for something this huge that early in my career,” Bode said, reflecting on her breakthrough “Wicked” role. “But I knew that it was something that I needed to put my all into.”

Bode’s portrayal of Nessarose in Wicked marked a groundbreaking moment in Hollywood, as she became the first wheelchair-using actress to take on the role.

The film’s transformative message of inclusion not only redefined the character but also highlighted the importance of accessibility on set.

Reflecting on her experience in a fully accessible environment, Bode shares how it created a culture of inclusivity that went beyond just physical space.

“Accessibility isn’t only beneficial to me as an actress,” she said. “It also sets an unspoken thing of you’re welcome here, and we were thinking of you, and you’re not just an afterthought.”

As an outspoken advocate for both disability and LGBTQ+ rights, Bode doesn’t shy away from confronting online ableism and the dehumanization that marginalized groups often face.

She recalls a specific instance when ableist comments targeted not only her character but the disabled community as a whole, prompting her to speak out.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t have responded if it were just affecting me personally, but other disabled people are going to read these comments, and it affects disabled people as a whole,” Bode said.

With unwavering commitment to advocacy, Bode challenges societal norms, using her platform to foster a more inclusive and compassionate world.

In a poignant moment, she encourages others to stay true to their passion and not be deterred by obstacles: “There’s so much out there for you. And also, don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”
