Few figures have shaped modern finance and philanthropy like Michael Milken.

The former Wall Street innovator, whose high-yield bond market helped launch countless American industries, also endured one of the era’s most public legal battles.

Milken served time in prison and survived a life-threatening cancer diagnosis — yet has devoted most of his life to advancing medical research, education, and access to opportunity.

His latest achievement, the Milken Center for the Advancement of the American Dream, stands as a tribute to perseverance and possibility.

“We have to find solutions and hope,” he said.

Sitting down with host Giselle Fernandez for a special edition of “LA Stories,” Milken reflected on the journey that brought him here.

The center, located just steps from the White House, is a dynamic, interactive space that honors dreamers from every walk of life — immigrants, entrepreneurs, and everyday Americans who refused to give up.

Through powerful storytelling and cutting-edge technology, visitors encounter people whose struggles and triumphs mirror their own.

“What we hope is that the dreamers whose own dreams today feel challenged can come here and find the stories of thousands of people who overcame difficulties just like them.”

For Milken, the center is both personal and universal: a culmination of lessons learned from triumph, loss, and redemption. It celebrates the belief that opportunity, education, and compassion can lift entire generations, reflecting Milken’s conviction that the American Dream is still alive for anyone willing to reach for it.

“It’s not just my story,” he said. “It’s the story of every dreamer anywhere in the world.”
